Apostles were looking on, Jesus was lifted up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A reading from the Acts of the Apostles<\/strong><br><br>In the first book, Theophilus,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; until the day he was taken up,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; to the apostles whom he had chosen.<br>He presented himself alive to them<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; by many proofs after he had suffered,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; appearing to them during forty days<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and speaking about the kingdom of God.<br>While meeting with the them,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; but to wait for \u201cthe promise of the Father<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; about which you have heard me speak;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; for John baptized with water,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.\u201d<br><br>When they had gathered together they asked him,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cLord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?\u201d<br>He answered them, \u201cIt is not for you to know the times or seasons<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; that the Father has established by his own authority.<br>But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; throughout Judea and Samaria,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and to the ends of the earth.\u201d<br>When he had said this, as they were looking on,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.<br>While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.<br>They said, \u201cMen of Galilee,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; why are you standing there looking at the sky?<br>This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; will return in the same way as you have seen him going into he gave gifts to men.<\/em><br>What does \u201che ascended\u201d mean except that he also descended<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; into the lower regions of the earth?<br>The one who descended is also the one who ascended<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; far above all the heavens,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; that he might fill all things.<br><br>And he gave some as apostles, others as prophets,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; for building up the body of Christ,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; until we all attain to the unity of faith<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature to manhood,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature to manhood,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; to the extent of the full stature of Christ.<br><br><strong>The word of the Lord.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acclamation before the Gospel<br>Mt 28:19a, 20b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u211f.&nbsp;<strong>Alleluia, alleluia.<\/strong><br>Go and teach all nations, says the Lord;<br>I am with you always, until the end of the world.<br>\u211f.&nbsp;<strong>Alleluia, alleluia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-pane kt-accordion-pane kt-accordion-pane-18 kt-pane_d08bb5-ce\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-header-wrap\"><button class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-header kt-acccordion-button-label-show\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title-wrap\"><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-title\"><strong>Gospel<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span class=\"kt-blocks-accordion-icon-trigger\"><\/span><\/button><\/div><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel\"><div class=\"kt-accordion-panel-inner\">\n<p>Gospel<br><strong>Mk 16:15-20<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lord Jesus was taken up to heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2720\u00a0<strong>A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark<\/strong><br><br>Jesus said to his disciples:<br>\u201cGo into the whole world<br>\u00a0\u00a0 and proclaim the gospel to every creature.<br>Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved;<br>\u00a0\u00a0 whoever does not believe will be condemned.<br>These signs will accompany those who believe:<br>\u00a0\u00a0 in my name they will drive out demons,<br>\u00a0\u00a0 they will speak new languages.<br>They will pick up serpents with their hands,<br>\u00a0\u00a0 and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them.<br>They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.\u201d<br><br>So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them,<br>\u00a0\u00a0 was taken up into heaven<br>\u00a0\u00a0 and took his seat at the right hand of God.<br>But they went forth and preached everywhere,<br>\u00a0\u00a0 while the Lord worked with them<br>\u00a0\u00a0 and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fad899\"><strong>Reflection<\/strong><br><br>Through the Paschal Mystery, Jesus is acknowledged: Jesus Christ is Lord (Phil 2:11)!<br><br>Jesus\u2019 journey from death to life was completed when he ascended into heaven and sat at the right hand of the Father and sent the Holy Spirit upon his disciples.<br><br>Before he departed from them, Jesus left clear instructions to the eleven: \u201cIn a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.\u201d<br><br>Then, there was still something important missing from their formation.&nbsp; They were chosen by Jesus, they were taught by him, they were eyewitnesses to all that he had done, they saw him at various times and ate with him after his resurrection.&nbsp; But this was not enough.&nbsp; Something still needed to be accomplished in Jesus\u2019 salvific plan: the coming of the Spirit of God, as was prophesied.<br><br>Jesus chose his disciples to be his witnesses throughout the world.&nbsp; To this point, most of us would understand and we might also try to be witnesses at times in our lives.&nbsp; But no human effort is enough to undertake an authentic work of witness.&nbsp; Jesus continues to assert: \u201cBut you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;&nbsp;and you will be my witnesses&nbsp;in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,&nbsp;and to the ends of the earth\u201d (Acts 1:8).<br><strong><em>\u201cGo into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creation\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>\u2013 Is everyone called to go into all the world?&nbsp; No!&nbsp; But everyone is called to go, by which I mean to leave his or her comfortable environment and preach the Gospel.&nbsp; How can this be done?&nbsp; This surely cannot be done by one\u2019s efforts alone.&nbsp; We need the Holy Spirit; we need his gifts.&nbsp; As the Eleven had a relationship with Jesus that transformed them gradually, we also need a relationship with Jesus that transforms us, transforms our values and our priorities.&nbsp; This is the work of the Spirit within us.<br><br><strong>\u201cWhoever believes and is baptised\u201d<\/strong>\u2013 We believe and are baptised.&nbsp; The first disciples did not have these advantages!&nbsp; In our case, we were first baptised, and then we were taught to believe.&nbsp; We cannot begin our journey of faith as disciples of the Lord without them.&nbsp; Jesus also refers to the signs and effects that will accompany those who believe and are baptised: salvation, casting out demons \u2026 We must ask this question: Are these signs apparent in our lives?
