\u201cWho do people say that I am?\u201d<br>They said in reply,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cJohn the Baptist, others Elijah,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; still others one of the prophets.\u201d<br>And he asked them,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cBut who do you say that I am?\u201d<br>Peter said to him in reply,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cYou are the Christ.\u201d<br>Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.<br><br>He began to teach them<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; that the Son of Man must suffer greatly<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and be killed, and rise after three days.<br>He spoke this openly.<br>Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.<br>At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; rebuked Peter and said, \u201cGet behind me, Satan.<br>You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.\u201d<br><br>He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cWhoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; take up his cross, and follow me.<br>For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; but whoever loses his life for my sake<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and that of the gospel will save it.\u201d<br><br>At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:<br><br><strong>The Gospel of the Lord.<\/strong><br><br>All reply:<br><br><strong>Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u211f.\u00a0<strong>Alleluia, alleluia.<\/strong><br><br>May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord<br>through which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world.<br><br>\u211f.\u00a0<strong>Alleluia, alleluia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fad899\"><strong>Lectio Divina<\/strong><br><br><strong>In the four Gospels we find many people and read of their reactions towards Jesus and his teachings:<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>Those who recognised Jesus as the Messiah \u2026 and those who didn\u2019t.<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>Those who believed he is the Son of God \u2026 and those who wanted to kill him.<\/strong><br>&#8211; <strong>Those who saw and believed \u2026 and those whose hearts remained closed.<\/strong><br><br>In today\u2019s account (found halfway through the Gospel according to St Mark), the Evangelist presents us with an episode about Jesus\u2019 identity. This time, it is not the people who are asking who he is. It is Jesus himself who takes the initiative and asks his disciples who the people thought he is, and also asked the disciples themselves who they thought he is.<br><br>Jesus had now been with them for quite a while\u2014they spent time with him, they saw him perform several miracles. From the first chapter in Mark\u2019s Gospel we find a man with an unclean spirit who says \u201cI know who you are the Holy One of God (Mk 1:24). However, only three verses later we find the same crowd who had witnessed the miracle asking: \u201cWhat is this?\u00a0A new teaching with authority!\u201d (Mk 1:27).\u00a0The same question was asked by the disciples when they were with Jesus on the boat \u201cWho then is this, that even\u00a0the wind and the sea obey him?\u201d (Mk 4:41). Later in the same Gospel according to Mark, we read about how the people were astounded when Jesus brought Jairus\u2019 daughter back from the dead (Mk 5:42). Not even this miracle was enough because those who heard him teach in the synagogue said with astonishment: \u201cWhat is the wisdom given to him\u2026Is not this\u00a0the carpenter, the son of Mary?\u201d (Mk 6:2-3). It comes as no surprise that he was amazed at their lack of faith!<br><br>They heard him preach. The heard him teach with authority. They saw him perform miracles. They saw him raise the dead. But they still did not recognise him. Not even Peter, who acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, had recognised him. Because, in Peter\u2019s mind, the Messiah was to inspire awe and not one who was to suffer, be rejected and killed. Jesus was not how the Messiah was imagined to be. Although his fame had spread throughout Galilee, they still did not know him. They ate with him and they still did not know him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prayer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Jesus, you were not what the people of your time expected \u2026 and neither according to what I expect. It is not by declaring that you are the \u201cHoly One of God\u201d (like the man who was possessed). It is not by declaring you as \u201cthe Messiah\u201d (as Peter did). What use is it if at the same time I disapprove when I hear you say something that does not sit well with me? What use is it if at the same time I turn against you because your perspective is not the same as mine?<\/p><p>Jesus, help me to acknowledge you, not by my lips, but by my <strong>actions<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Help me to acknowledge you by <strong>doing<\/strong> your will.<\/p><p>Help me to encounter you like the centurion who stood near the cross \u2026 to encounter you as you are: not as I imagine you to be or how I wish that you could be, but as you truly are, hanging dead on the cross, but glorious to those who know how to walk hand in hand with you. So that I can truly live (not just affirm) the centurion\u2019s declaration: \u201cTruly this man was the Son of God\u201d (Mk 15:39).
