who was reported to him for squandering his property.<br>He summoned him and said,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; \u2018What is this I hear about you?<br>Prepare a full account of your stewardship,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; because you can no longer be my steward.\u2019<br>The steward said to himself, \u2018What shall I do,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; now that my master is taking the position of steward away from me?<br>I am not strong enough to dig and I am ashamed to beg.<br>I know what I shall do so that,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; when I am removed from the stewardship,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; they may welcome me into their homes.\u2019<br>He called in his master\u2019s debtors one by one.<br>To the first he said,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; \u2018How much do you owe my master?\u2019<br>He replied, \u2018One hundred measures of olive oil.\u2019<br>He said to him, \u2018Here is your promissory note.<br>Sit down and quickly write one for fifty.\u2019<br>Then to another the steward said, \u2018And you, how much do you owe?\u2019<br>He replied, \u2018One hundred kors of wheat.\u2019<br>The steward said to him, \u2018Here is your promissory note;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; write one for eighty.\u2019<br>And the master commended that dishonest steward for acting prudently.<br>\u201cFor the children of this world<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; are more prudent in dealing with their own generation<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; than are the children of light.<br>I tell you, make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; so that when it fails, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.<br>The person who is trustworthy in very small matters<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; is also trustworthy in great ones;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; is also dishonest in great ones.<br>If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; who will trust you with true wealth?<br>If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; who will give you what is yours?<br>No servant can serve two masters.<br>He will either hate one and love the other,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; or be devoted to one and despise the other.<br>You cannot serve both God and mammon.\u201d<br><br>Or [Shorter Form]:<br><br>Jesus said to his disciples:<br>The person who is trustworthy in very small matters<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; or be devoted to one and despise the other.<br>You cannot serve both God and mammon.\u201d<br><br>At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:<br><br><strong>The Gospel of the Lord.<\/strong><br><br>All reply:<br><br><strong>Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fad899\"><strong>Reflection <br><\/strong><br>Jesus\u2019 speech that we read this Sunday, taken from the opening verses of chapter sixteen of the Gospel according to St Luke, must be read in connection with what Jesus says in the two preceding chapters. This is not only because the context in which this discourse takes place is the same\u2014namely, Jesus on the road to Jerusalem, where he is going to lay down his life for us\u2014but also because there are several shared themes and expressions. These common threads help us to better understand the deeper message conveyed in the seemingly puzzling words of today\u2019s Gospel. <br><br>First, we encounter the recurring theme of wealth. Two Sundays ago, Jesus said that no one can be his disciple unless they renounce all their possessions. Today, Jesus speaks of a steward who was squandering his master\u2019s wealth\u2014much like the younger son in the parable of the Prodigal Son, who wastes his share of his father\u2019s inheritance. Thus, we are immediately reminded that all wealth, which we as human beings inevitably handle\u2014whether for our families, our workplaces, or in public or ecclesial roles\u2014is never truly our own. It is entrusted to us. Even our personal belongings are given to us on loan, entrusted to us to be managed wisely. This brings us to another comparison, this time with chapter twelve of the same Gospel, where Jesus speaks of the faithful and wise servant whom the master entrusts with the management of his household. On that occasion, Jesus also warns that if the servant loses his sense of responsibility and begins to mistreat the other servants and indulge in drunkenness (we can assume he is drinking from the resources of his master\u2019s house, thus wasting his wealth), there will come an unexpected hour when the master returns and exacts judgment (see Luke 12:41\u201346)\u2014just as today\u2019s steward is dismissed from his position of trust. What, then, is Jesus\u2019 ultimate response? \u201cYou cannot serve both God and money.\u201d <br><br>Wealth is important and has its rightful place, and we must be wise in how we manage it\u2014without being na\u00efve or allowing ourselves to be exploited\u2014but at the same time without allowing it to become our god. Just as no one can be Jesus\u2019 disciple \u201cunless they hate their father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters\u2014yes, even their own life\u201d (Luke 14:26), so too, \u201cNo servant can serve two masters.
