not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; will pass from the law,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; until all things have taken place.<br>Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and teaches others to do so<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.<br>But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.<br>I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; that of the scribes and Pharisees,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.<br><br>\u201cYou have heard that it was said to your ancestors,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.<\/em><br>But I say to you,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; whoever is angry with brother<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; will be liable to judgment;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and whoever says to brother, \u2018Raqa,\u2019<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; will be answerable to the Sanhedrin;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and whoever says, \u2018You fool,\u2019<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; will be liable to fiery Gehenna.<br>Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and there recall that your brother<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; has anything against you,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; leave your gift there at the altar,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; go first and be reconciled with your brother,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and then come and offer your gift.<br>Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court.<br>Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and the judge will hand you over to the guard,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and you will be thrown into prison.<br>Amen, I say to you,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.<br><br>\u201cYou have heard that it was said,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>You shall not commit adultery.<\/em><br>But I say to you,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; everyone who looks at a woman with lust<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; has already committed adultery with her in his heart.<br>If your right eye causes you to sin,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; tear it out and throw it away.<br>It is better for you to lose one of your members<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna.<br>And if your right hand causes you to sin,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; cut it off and throw it away.<br>It is better for you to lose one of your members<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.<br><br>\u201cIt was also said,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce.<\/em><br>But I say to you,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; whoever divorces his wife\u2014unless the marriage is unlawful\u2014<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; causes her to commit adultery,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.<br><br>\u201cAgain you have heard that it was said to your ancestors,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Do not take a false oath,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; but make good to the Lord all that you vow.<\/em><br>But I say to you, do not swear at all;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; not by heaven, for it is God\u2019s throne;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; nor by the earth, for it is his footstool;<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.<br>Do not swear by your head,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; for you cannot make a single hair white or black.<br>Let your \u2018Yes\u2019 mean \u2018Yes,\u2019 and your \u2018No\u2019 mean \u2018No.\u2019<br>Anything more is from the evil one.\u201d<br><br><strong><em>Or: [Shorter form]<br><\/em><\/strong><br>Jesus said to his disciples:<br>\u201cI tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; but make good to the Lord all that you vow.<\/em><br>But I say to you, do not swear at all.<br>Let your \u2018Yes\u2019 mean \u2018Yes,\u2019 and your \u2018No\u2019 mean \u2018No.\u2019<br>Anything more is from the evil one.\u201d<br><br>At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:<br><br><strong>The Gospel of the Lord.<\/strong><br><br>All reply:<br><br><strong>Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fad899\"><strong>Reflection<\/strong> <br><br>In today\u2019s Gospel, Jesus seems to want to show us the beauty and importance of being truly human in our choices, journeying towards holistic maturity. Everything depends on the choices we make and how we make them. We are what we choose. We are shaped by what we choose. The Gospel makes it clear that Jesus did not come to abolish the laws that had existed since the time of Moses, but to give them life and bring them to perfection. With this attitude, we can come to observe, fulfil and live these same laws from a heart filled with love and mature responsibility. This cannot happen without the continuous process of discernment, which opens us to others and is expressed in mature human and spiritual relationships. The law said: \u201cYou shall not kill.\u201d Jesus told us: \u201cDo not be angry.\u201d The law gives you the extreme; Jesus offers us a relational process. <br><br>To observe the law\u2014do not kill, do not steal, and so on\u2014so that we may consider ourselves righteous, be regarded as good people, feel comfortable with ourselves, appear good in the eyes of society \u2026 all this without relationships founded on love, and without the ongoing process of discernment, is smoke blown away by the wind. Life is not merely the observance of the extreme of the law; it is a continuous relational journey. The protagonist of discernment must be God and not our self-centred love. Where the latter exists, there is only an empty shell lacking faith and spirituality. <br><br>Pause and Reflect \u2013 How does this profound passage of the Gospel touch your daily life? \u2013 Do you justify yourself by simply observing the law, and how do you act in your daily relationships? \u2013 Have you ever reflected on the superficial religiosity into which you may easily fall?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Prayer <\/p><p>Lord Jesus, help me to know myself. Purify me from superficial religiosity, strengthen my faith, and teach me to love as you desire.
