Apostles were looking on, Jesus was lifted up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A reading from the Acts of the Apostles<\/strong><br><br>In the first book, Theophilus,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; until the day he was taken up,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; to the apostles whom he had chosen.<br>He presented himself alive to them<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; by many proofs after he had suffered,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; appearing to them during forty days<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and speaking about the kingdom of God.<br>While meeting with them,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; but to wait for \u201cthe promise of the Father<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; about which you have Father has established by his own authority.<br>But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; throughout Judea and Samaria,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and to the ends of the earth.\u201d<br>When he had said this, as they were looking on,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.<br>While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.<br>They said, \u201cMen of Galilee,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; why are you standing there looking at the sky?<br>This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; will return in the same way as you have seen him going into to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.<br>When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.<br>Then Jesus approached and said to them,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cAll power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.<br>Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; baptizing them in the name of the Father,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp; teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.<br>And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.\u201d<br><br>At the end of the Gospel, the Deacon, or the Priest, acclaims:<br><br><strong>The Gospel of the Lord.<\/strong><br><br>All reply:<br><br><strong>Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fad899\"><strong>Reflection<\/strong><br><br>For this year celebration of the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, the Church presents us with the final verses of Matthew\u2019s Gospel. In their encounter with the Risen Christ\u2014whom they had not yet fully grasped\u2014some believed and fell down before Jesus as if trying to hold him fixed in one place so as not to lose him, while others doubted, perhaps because the cynicism and pessimism resulting from the trauma and defeat of the Cross still marked them; their hearts had not yet found peace. And this is not so strange, after all because, even in daily life, we know that, faced with the same news or experience, each person reacts in a different and unique way.<br><br>Yet, whether those who believed so strongly that they wanted to keep him for themselves, or those who were more hesitant but still open to the experience, to all Jesus gives three commands (responsibilities or tasks): \u201cgo,\u201d \u201cmake disciples,\u201d and \u201cbaptise them.\u201d These three imperatives essentially form the whole mission of the Church and, because they belong to the whole Church, they are also our tasks\u2014whether we tend to keep Jesus to ourselves or at times struggle and wrestle with our faith.<br><br>First: <em>\u201cgo,\u201d <\/em>that is, do not remain here gathered around me, but go out and seek your brothers and sisters. Despite all your personal difficulties, you are still called to share with them the experience of a personal encounter with Christ\u2014an experience that is sometimes powerful and at other times quieter than silence, except for that promise which echoes in our ears and to which we cling.<br><br>Second: <em>\u201cmake disciples,\u201d<\/em> that is, not simply to get to know people wherever you go or to form friendships on a purely human level, but to build relationships that go deeper. Friendships in which, with gentleness and intimacy, you share your own relationship with Jesus\u2014not to bind others to yourselves as if they were followers or dependents, nor simply to increase numbers, but because you are convinced that friendship with Jesus is the most beautiful reality in your life, and you desire that your friends too may become his friends.<br><br>Finally: <em>\u201cbaptise them.\u201d<\/em> In practice, we often leave this task to priests. However, the responsibility of Baptism\u2014of leading someone towards it\u2014does not belong only to the priest. First and foremost, it belongs to parents, godparents, catechists, Christian teachers, grandparents with their grandchildren. You received this mission when you were entrusted with the light of the candle lit from the Paschal flame: to keep it alive, strong, and never extinguished.
