Pauls&#8217; Letter to the Romans<\/strong><br>I think that what we suffer in this life can never be compared to the glory, as yet unrevealed, which is waiting for us. The whole creation is eagerly waiting for God to reveal his sons. It was not for any fault on the part of creation that it was made unable to attain its purpose, it was made so by God; but creation still retains the hope of being freed, like us, from its slavery to decadence, to enjoy the same freedom and glory as the children of God. The people all stood on the beach, and he told them many things in parables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said, \u2018Imagine a sower going out to sow. As he sowed, some seeds fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on patches of rock where they found little soil and sprang up straight away, because there was no depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up they were scorched and, not having any roots, they withered away. Others fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Others fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Listen, anyone who has ears!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then the disciples went up to him and asked, \u2018Why do you talk to them in parables?\u2019 \u2018Because\u2019 he replied, \u2018the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven are revealed to you, but they are not revealed to them. For anyone who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough; but from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. The reason I talk to them in parables is that they look without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding. So in their case this prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will listen and listen again, but not understand,<br>see and see again, but not perceive.<br>For the heart of this nation has grown coarse,<br>their ears are dull of hearing, and they have shut their eyes,<br>for fear they should see with their eyes,<br>hear with their ears,<br>understand with their heart,<br>and be converted<br>and be healed by me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018But happy are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! I tell you solemnly, many prophets and holy men longed to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018You, therefore, are to hear the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom without understanding, the evil one comes and carries off what was sown in his heart: this is the man who received the seed on the edge of the path. The one who received it on patches of rock is the man who hears the word and welcomes it at once with joy. But he has no root in him, he does not last; let some trial come, or some persecution on account of the word, and he falls away at once. The one who received the seed in thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this world and the lure of riches choke the word and so he produces nothing. And the one who received the seed in rich soil is the man who hears the word and understands it; he is the one who yields a harvest and produces now a hundredfold, now sixty, now thirty.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The word of the Lord.<\/strong><br>\u211f. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fad899\"><strong>Reflection<\/strong><br><br>On this Sunday we begin reading the third of the five major speeches that provide the framework for Matthew\u2019s Gospel. In this discourse, as we shall also see over the coming Sundays, Jesus tells some of the parables that we call the Parables of the Kingdom of Heaven, a kingdom that is both a present reality and one that is moving towards the final judgement and the experience of the fullness of the righteous in God.<br><br>If we take a closer look at this parable and at the explanation that Jesus himself gives when he is alone with the disciples, the greatest difficulty we encounter is not so much its practical and logical meaning, but rather what Jesus says, where he appears to draw a distinction\u2014or, according to the logic of today\u2019s society, to discriminate\u2014between the disciples, who are regarded as insiders and therefore are presumed to have understood the parable without the explanation, and everyone else, whom Jesus seems not to want to understand.<br><br>The quotation that Jesus takes from Prophet Isaiah sheds light on what at first sounds senseless to our ears. The truth is that it is not because Jesus did not want them to understand, but precisely because their hearts had become like the hardened path: there was a barrier between them and Jesus. Although they began by listening to him eagerly, they continued to measure what he said according to their own prejudices and fixed way of thinking, which did not allow his word to take root. They felt that his word was not enough to answer the circumstances of their lives; they found it irrelevant; or, worse still, because the answer was not the one they had expected or desired, the thorns of their own expectations choked the word\u2014the very word that alone could have been enough for them, indeed, that could have become their everything.<br><br>The same can happen to us. We hear the word of God every Sunday, yet there may still be a barrier that prevents us from allowing it to pierce us to the very heart, so that it may bring about a radical change in the way we think, speak and act. Even if what we do remains outwardly the same\u2014because life is made up of routines\u2014the way we do it can be different, shaped by the mind of Christ. This is not a Christ of our own making, a custom-made Christ, but the Christ who is made known to us through the word that is proclaimed to us.<br><br>What also fascinates me about this parable is that it reveals how God never loses confidence in us as human beings. He continues to speak his word to us until, perhaps at last, the hardened path begins to soften and the seed sinks into the soil. He patiently pursues us until, even if our hearts are barren, the seed still grows\u2014if only into a small shrub, like thyme, whose fragrance delights us and whose flavour enriches our food. He keeps sowing the seed of his word until, perhaps, although the thorns of our worries and anxieties are never far away and constantly circle in our minds, we learn to listen more attentively to his words, \u201cCome to me\u201d (Mt 11:28), which we heard last Sunday, rather than allowing anxiety to consume us from within. He remains patient until, perhaps at last, we become good soil that bears fruit, even if at times we resemble those who refuse to listen, until eventually our hearts yield and are softened.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p> <strong>Prayer<\/strong><\/p><p>Lord, confronted with this parable, which we have heard so many times, sow your word and your trust in me once again, so that the seed may take root, mature, and bring me to maturity. May it ensure that our lives are not wasted in emptiness and futility, but are truly lived as part of the Kingdom of Heaven, which is already here among us and yet is still moving towards its complete fulfilment.
