The Second Reflection on the Apotheosis of Saint Francis in the Church of the Conventual Franciscan Friars, Valletta<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most High, all-powerful, good Lord, yours is the praise,
the glory and the honor and every blessing.
To you alone, Most High, do they belong,
and no one is worthy to speak your name.<\/p>\nSaint Francis, Canticle of the Creatures<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Accompanying Saint Francis as he stands before the glory of the Lord, on the left-hand side of the painting, we find an angel holding a scroll bearing the words: Deus meus et Omnia<\/em>\u2014\u201cMy God and my All.\u201d This was a mantra that Saint Francis often repeated, and around which he shaped his own life and the life of the brothers who lived with him. These words remind us both that without God we can go nowhere, and that, in all that we live and do, God must be at the centre of everything. Otherwise, we may find ourselves doing good things, yet the purpose for which we do them may not be the purpose to which we, as Christians, are called.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further down, we find two other references to the Order of Friars Minor, particularly to the Conventual Franciscans. On the right is the Basilica of Saint Francis and the Sacro Convento, as they appear when approaching the town of Assisi; on the left are three angels holding a small shield bearing the emblem of the Order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the centre of the emblem is the wood of the Cross, with radiance streaming from it, seemingly held between two arms: one belonging to Jesus and the other to Saint Francis. Both bear the wound left by the nails. The two arms emerge from the clouds, a symbol of heaven, but perhaps also an image of the cloud that shrouded in mystery the presence of God: both the summit of Golgotha, where the Lord was crucified for us, and Mount La Verna, where Saint Francis was united with Jesus in the mystery of his Passion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
